Why We Stopped Buying 3-Tier Stands and Had One Display Built Instead
We measured the bracelet stands we had been buying for years, worked out what they actually cost us in table space, and had a 10-tier built. Here are the numbers that decided it.
For about four years we sold jewelry out of a festival booth, and for about four years we solved the same problem the same wrong way.
The problem was always the last hour of setup. We would bring enough stock to justify the booth fee, start laying it out, and discover — again — that the table had run out well before the inventory had. Whatever did not fit went into bins under the tablecloth. Bins under the tablecloth do not sell anything.
The fix, every time, was another 3-tier stand.
What a 3-tier stand actually gives you
Nobody measures the fixtures they already own. We finally did, because we were about to commission something and needed to know what we were replacing.
A standard 3-tier bracelet stand — the kind sold everywhere, usually as an 8-inch or 10-inch model — carries three bars. Measured across the working span, those bars are 9¾ to 10 inches. Loaded properly, at a density where a shopper can still get a finger under a piece, each bar holds about thirty bracelets.

Now the part that decided it: that stand occupies roughly 1.2 square feet of table.
Ninety pieces per 1.2 square feet is about 75 bracelets per square foot of table. To put out 600 pieces — a realistic weekend inventory for a two-day show — we needed somewhere between six and seven of those stands, and about six square feet of table to stand them on. On a 6-foot vendor table, that is essentially the entire surface, gone, with nowhere left to wrap a purchase or take a payment.
We were not short of bracelets. We were short of table.
The stand that started it
A friend two booths down had an 8-level stand he had picked up in Indonesia. It was not especially well made and it had no drawer, but it did the one thing ours did not: it went up instead of out.
We tried to buy more of them for a year. Nobody we called was reliable, nothing came back consistently, and the samples that did arrive were not built to survive being packed into a van forty weekends a year. Eventually it became obvious that if we wanted it, we would have to have it manufactured ourselves.
So we specified it around the failure we kept hitting.
What we changed, and why
Ten levels instead of three. The height that a 43.5-inch display reaches is the height a shopper’s eye is already at. Stock on a flat table gets read one piece at a time. Stock at eye level gets read as a collection.
18-inch bars instead of 10-inch. This is the change people underestimate. Going from a 10-inch bar to an 18-inch bar is not an eighty percent improvement in one dimension that you then forget about — it is nearly twice the pieces on every single bar, ten times over. Combined with the extra levels, one stand holds about 600.

A drawer in the base. This came from trade shows rather than festivals. There is always a roll of tags, a card reader, a pen and a phone that need to live somewhere that is not the selling surface. Putting them in the base also puts weight at the bottom, which is what keeps a 43-inch stand steady when someone leans on the table.
Bars that lift out. So you can load a bar in your lap at the hotel instead of reaching over the display at six in the morning, and so a damaged bar is a replaceable part rather than a dead fixture.
The arithmetic that mattered
Here is the comparison in the only two units that count at a show — pieces displayed, and table consumed.

The footprints are the same. That is the entire point, and it is why the honest headline is a comparison rather than a boast: for the same square foot of table, you are choosing between ninety bracelets and six hundred.
We say one replaces five rather than six because five is the number that holds up on every measurement, including the unflattering ones.
What actually changed at the booth
The capacity was the reason we did it. It was not the part that made the difference.
The difference was the nearly five square feet that came back. That space became a second product line, and a spot to wrap and take payment without moving anything. Our worst recurring loss at a show was never a shopper who did not want the piece — it was a shopper holding a piece with nowhere to complete the transaction.
The second thing was setup time. Six stands is six stands to unpack, position, level and load. One is one.
Where this does not apply
If you sell twenty high-margin pieces and presentation is the product, a 10-tier is the wrong fixture and we will say so. Sparse and deliberate sells jewelry at that price. Our bar loading guide covers the densities that work at different price points.

Common questions
- Why replace 3-tier bracelet stands with one tall display?
- Because they consume the same table area for a fifth of the capacity. The constraint at a show is surface area, not inventory, so growing upward rather than outward is what actually adds stock.
- How much table space does a 10-tier display save?
- About 4.8 square feet against the five or six 3-tier stands needed to hold the same 600 pieces — six square feet down to 1.24.
- Is a taller display less stable?
- Not when the base is weighted and deep. A drawer at the bottom puts mass low and the base runs nearly ten inches deep, and loading the lower bars first adds to that.
